Sokoto Unveils 10-Day Vaccination Drive for Two Million Children!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Sokoto State Government has announced the launch of a large-scale vaccination campaign targeting approximately two million children across the state. The 10-day exercise, beginning October 6, 2025, aims to protect children under the age of five from measles, rubella, and polio.
Campaign Highlights
- The exercise is being coordinated by the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA) in collaboration with UNICEF, WHO, and other development partners.
- Children aged 9 months to 5 years will be vaccinated at schools, health centres, mosques, markets, and designated temporary outreach sites.
- The initiative is part of national efforts to reduce outbreaks and close immunization gaps worsened by insecurity and post-pandemic disruptions.
Government’s Position
- Dr. Larai Aliyu, Executive Secretary of the SPHCDA, emphasized that the campaign is crucial to eliminating vaccine-preventable childhood diseases in Sokoto.
- The state is also deploying mobile health teams to reach rural and nomadic communities where access to healthcare is limited.
Why It Matters
- Sokoto has recorded sporadic outbreaks of measles and circulating vaccine-derived polio in the past year.
- The campaign strengthens Nigeria’s broader goal of achieving universal child immunization and meeting 2030 global health targets.
What to Watch
- Community response and coverage rates across hard-to-reach areas.
- Logistics, cold-chain management, and security challenges in volatile LGAs.
- Impact on routine immunization confidence and health service uptake.
