The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) has officially withdrawn its earlier directive mandating monthly electronic filing of tax returns, citing concerns over practical challenges and stakeholder feedback. In a revised notice issued on January 8, 2026, the agency reaffirmed that taxpayers are now only required to comply with annual electronic tax filing, in line with the provisions of the Sokoto State Tax Administration and Consolidation Law.According to the SIRS Executive Chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Lawal Bello, the agency’s decision reflects its commitment to ease of doing business and aligning tax procedures with national standards. He clarified that taxpayers and tax agents must continue to file their annual returns electronically on or before January 31st each year, as stipulated by law, while monthly filings will no longer be enforced.
The reversal of the monthly directive follows consultations with business owners, tax consultants, and professional bodies who expressed concerns about increased administrative burdens. The Sokoto IRS urged taxpayers to remain compliant with the revised guidelines and leverage its digital platforms for timely filing and payment. The move is expected to simplify the tax process and improve voluntary compliance across the state.
