Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), legal icon and founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to intensify efforts to identify and shut down illegal and poorly run private universities in Nigeria.
“We cannot allow our education system to be undermined by institutions that lack standards, qualified staff, or proper infrastructure,” Babalola said during an education summit in Abuja.
Key Points:
- He criticised the proliferation of “mushroom” institutions that exploit students.
- Called for stricter accreditation, quality assurance, and monitoring.
- Urged the NUC to publish a list of verified institutions and prosecute violators.
Why It Matters:
- Substandard universities harm students’ futures and Nigeria’s academic credibility.
- Regulatory loopholes have allowed many illegal institutions to flourish.
- Babalola’s advocacy highlights growing concerns over private sector regulation in education.
What to Watch:
- NUC’s potential review of accreditation processes.
- Crackdown on fake degrees and unapproved campuses.
- Public response from students, education stakeholders, and policymakers.
