Shock as Nairobi Lawyer Killed in Drive-By Shooting
Nairobi, Kenya – A prominent Nairobi-based lawyer was fatally shot in a drive-by attack on Tuesday evening, sending shockwaves through the legal community and raising concerns about the safety of legal professionals in the country.
According to preliminary reports, the lawyer was ambushed by unknown assailants while driving along a major thoroughfare in the city. Eyewitnesses reported that a motorcycle approached the lawyer’s vehicle, and the passenger opened fire before fleeing the scene. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have yet to release the identity of the deceased pending notification of the family. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, appealing to the public for any information that could aid in apprehending the perpetrators.
This incident adds to a series of attacks targeting legal professionals in Kenya. In January 2024, Nairobi lawyer Anthony Gathitu Kabathi was ambushed and shot by gunmen on the Isiolo-Modogashe road while returning from a client’s meeting in Garissa. He sustained severe gunshot wounds and was hospitalized in critical condition. [1]
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned the recent killing, calling on the government to enhance security measures for legal practitioners. “The safety of our members is paramount. We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice,” said LSK President Eric Theuri.
The legal fraternity and human rights organizations have expressed deep concern over the increasing threats faced by lawyers in the country. Many have called for immediate action to ensure the protection of those upholding the rule of law.
As investigations continue, the legal community mourns the loss of a colleague and reiterates the need for a secure environment where justice can be pursued without fear.
