Shettima Reaffirms FG’s Commitment to Protecting Traditional InstitutionsReported by Sele Media Africa|Ihuoma AmarachiABUJA, NIGERIA —Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has restated the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to preserving and safeguarding the nation’s traditional institutions, describing them as “permanent pillars of society.”Speaking at the 2023 Durbar Festival held in Kano on Saturday, Shettima emphasized the historical and cultural importance of monarchs and traditional leaders in fostering national unity, conflict resolution, and community development. He stressed that the Tinubu administration recognises the critical role traditional institutions play in nation-building and peacekeeping.“We must protect and preserve our traditional institutions. They are not relics of the past but living bridges between our history and our future,” Shettima said.
His remarks come amid increasing calls from cultural stakeholders for greater legal and financial support for traditional rulers, particularly in regions grappling with insecurity and social unrest.Shettima also acknowledged the concerns raised about the marginalisation of monarchs in governance and assured that new policies will be introduced to strengthen their roles in local leadership and conflict mediation.
