Seychelles to Hold Presidential Election Rerun as No Candidate Secures 50% Majority
Victoria, Seychelles – September 28, 2025 The Electoral Commission of Seychelles has announced a rerun of the presidential election after no candidate secured the required 50% majority in the first round of voting held last week. According to official results released on Saturday, the top two contenders incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan and opposition leader Patrick Herminie failed to meet the constitutional threshold, triggering a runoff election in accordance with Seychelles’ electoral laws. Preliminary figures show Ramkalawan leading slightly with 48.3%, while Herminie trailed closely with 46.1%. The third-place candidate garnered just under 6%, effectively making their supporters the potential deciders in the runoff. “The people have spoken. We are heading to a runoff, and we will respect their will,” said Electoral Commission Chairperson.
Under Seychelles’ constitution, a second-round election must be held within two weeks of the official declaration. The commission has tentatively scheduled the runoff for October 12, 2025, and preparations are already underway.International observers from the African Union and Commonwealth have praised the peaceful conduct of the election and urged continued calm ahead of the rerun.
