Senate President Akpabio Accused of ‘Setting Nigeria on Fire’!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of “setting Nigeria on fire” amid controversy surrounding the passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill 2026 by the National Assembly.
Adebayo made the allegation during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday, where he criticised Akpabio’s leadership and the Senate’s decision to reject a proposed amendment that would have made electronic transmission (e-transmission) of election results compulsory.
According to Adebayo, the Senate President whom he alleged was “receiving text messages from saboteurs” prioritised political interests over transparent electoral processes. He argued that the decision has contributed to growing national tension, insisting that Nigerians deserve a system where election results are openly and transparently transmitted.
The remarks come amid public outrage over the Senate’s exclusion of Clause 60(3) from the amendment bill, a provision that would have mandated real-time transmission of election results from polling units nationwide. Critics say the move undermines public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
Adebayo also highlighted broader systemic issues affecting Nigeria’s democracy, including unchecked campaign financing, excessive political spending, and vote-buying, urging lawmakers to act in the true interest of the electorate.
In response to mounting pressure, the Senate has reportedly scheduled an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to revisit the contentious provisions of the bill.
The accusation adds a fresh layer to the ongoing national debate on electoral reform and governance, with political stakeholders and citizens closely monitoring developments.
