Secondary School Certificate Enough for Political Office – Shehu Sani!
By David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has sparked a fresh round of political debate following his recent comments suggesting that a secondary school certificate is sufficient qualification for seeking political office in Nigeria.
Speaking during a public interaction session in Kaduna, the outspoken former lawmaker emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution allows individuals with a minimum of a secondary school education to contest elections and hold public office.
“In this country, what the law requires is a secondary school certificate. That is what the constitution says. You don’t need a PhD or Master’s degree to become a governor, senator or even president,” Sani said.
He made the statement while reacting to the recent wave of certificate controversies involving some political office holders, warning that political qualifications should not be reduced to academic grandstanding.
While clarifying that education is important for leadership, he insisted that overemphasis on certificates often distracts from assessing the character, vision, and integrity of public servants.
Sani’s remarks have since triggered mixed reactions across social media, with some Nigerians agreeing with his constitutional interpretation while others argue that the bar should be raised for higher public office holders, especially in a 21st-century democracy.
