LAGOS —The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring access and inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs) through comprehensive, inclusive policies. [1]
Statement at International Day Event At the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities — held at the Whitehouse Event Centre, Oregun, Ikeja and organised by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) — Sanwo‑Olu (represented by the Secretary to the State Government) said that this year’s theme, “Fostering Disability‑Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress,” aligns with the state’s commitments. [1] He underscored Lagos State’s adoption of global frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN‑CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to him: “Inclusion is a right, not a privilege.” [1]
What Lagos Has Done for PWDs- Enforcement of the state’s disability‑inclusion laws and policies, including infrastructure and access adjustments, to ensure persons with disabilities can move freely and access public services. The state is widely recognised for its efforts: the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) recently ranked Lagos top among states in Nigeria on implementation of disability‑access laws and infrastructure compliance. [2] –
Continuous support for PWDs’ social needs: the state government has, via LASODA, distributed assistive devices to individuals with disabilities, including wheelchairs and mobility aids, aiming to improve quality of life and social participation. [3] – Programs to promote inclusive education, employment, and access to social services — reflecting the state’s broader social protection and inclusivity agenda. [4]
Why This Matters
Sanwo‑Olu’s renewed commitment signals that Lagos aims to lead by example in Nigeria on disability inclusion. For millions of PWDs in the state, it offers hope for improved mobility, access to education and work, and full participation in civic life.It also reinforces that inclusive governance is not just a social ideal, but policy priority — aligning state actions with international standards and sustainable development goals.
