Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a strict prohibition on the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, explosives, and other unauthorised pyrotechnics as the Ember-month festive season draws near.
“These items pose serious safety risks and can be exploited by criminals to create panic or mask illegal activities,” the FCT Police spokesperson said.
Key Details:
- The ban takes immediate effect across all six area councils of the FCT.
- Market traders and residents are warned to comply or face arrest, prosecution, and confiscation of items.
- The police have also deployed surveillance teams to enforce compliance in markets and neighborhoods.
Why It Matters:
- Firecrackers have been linked to fire outbreaks, injuries, and fear during past festivities.
- The measure is aimed at preventing security breaches and ensuring a peaceful December holiday season.
- It follows similar bans recently issued in Imo and Plateau States.
What to Watch:
- Enforcement operations by FCT police across markets and residential areas.
- Public response, especially from traders and parents.
- Possible extension of similar bans to other parts of Nigeria.
