The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Saʽad Abubakar III, has rejected claims of a “Christian genocide” occurring in Nigeria’s northern region, describing the narrative as false and divisive. [1]
Speaking at the recent meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, the Sultan reiterated that Christians and Muslims have co‑existed for centuries in the North, and that allegations of a targeted campaign against Christians are aimed at sowing discord. [1]
The monarch also commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts in fighting banditry and insurgency across the region, highlighting that national security depends on collective cooperation rather than divisive narratives. [1]
Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reaffirmed its position that attacks against Christian‑majority communities in the Middle Belt and other regions amount to systemic violence, and accused the presidency of misrepresenting its stance when it said the killings were merely “so‑called” genocide. [2]
The issue comes amid increasing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s religious‑violence landscape, including debates in the U.S. over whether the country should be re‑designated as a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom. [3]
As discourse intensifies, religious‑community leaders on both sides are warning that politicising the violence could undermine ongoing peace initiatives and further inflame tensions.
