Rivers Niger, Benue at Peak Level; Flood Impending, NIHSa Warns
Abuja — The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSa) has issued a serious warning that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached peak water levels, raising the threat of flooding for communities along their banks. [1]
NIHSa Director‑General Muhammad Umar urged residents in flood‑prone areas to evacuate immediately and take precautions as intensifying rains and swollen tributaries add pressure. [1]
Key dams on the Niger River—Kainji and Jebba—are spilling excess water, with downstream communities such as Kainji town, Patigi, New Bussa, Borgu, Mokwa, and others at high risk. [1]
Also, tributaries such as the Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola—major feeders into the Niger and Benue systems—are at or near peak levels. Some dams are full, and in certain locations, like Goronyo, maximum spill is underway. [1]
NIHSa emphasised that proactive steps must be taken to safeguard lives and property, including relocating from low‑lying areas, securing valuables, and staying alert for further updates. [1] For more updates on weather, environmental alerts, and safety warnings, stay tuned to Sele Media Africa.
