Rivers Administrator Ibas Declares Presidential Mandate Fulfilled
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, announced on Friday that the presidential mandate entrusted to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been “sufficiently achieved.” This declaration follows the successful conduct of local government elections and the swearing-in of elected officials across the state’s 23 Local Government Areas. The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Government House in Port Harcourt, where the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) presented its comprehensive report on the recently concluded local government elections. Vice Admiral Ibas emphasized that the peaceful execution of the polls and the restoration of democratic governance at the grassroots level marked the fulfillment of the presidential directive issued to him on March 18, 2025. “Mr. President’s mandate to me was clear: to stabilize the state, create an enabling environment for the re-establishment of its institutions, and return Rivers State back to full democratic governance,” Ibas stated. “With the successful conduct and swearing-in of local government chairmen and their councils, I believe we have decisively achieved the mandate that we were given.” [1]
The RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Mike Odey, described the election as a “historic achievement” for both the state and the country. He noted that the Commission operated strictly in accordance with the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Law of 2018 (as amended) and credited the election’s success to robust collaboration with political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies. President Tinubu had declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state’s National Assembly. The declaration aimed to prevent the outbreak of a political crisis and restore order in the state. [3]With the successful transition back to democratic governance at the local level, Vice Admiral Ibas’s administration is expected to issue an official government white paper in due course, detailing the outcomes and recommendations from the RSIEC report.
