Resident Doctors Give FG 30-Day Ultimatum Over Unmet Demands
Abuja, Nigeria – September 28, 2025 The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate action on several unresolved issues related to their welfare, salary arrears, and working conditions. In a communiqué released after its September National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the association warned that failure to meet their demands could result in industrial action that would cripple healthcare services nationwide. Key Demands Include:
– Payment of salary arrears and allowances dating back to 2023
– Immediate implementation of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF)
– Upward review of hazard allowance
– Resolution of issues around the skipping policy and annual promotion
– Provision of medical equipment and infrastructure in federal hospitals
“Doctors are being pushed to the brink. Our patience is not endless,” NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi stated. (Source: Vanguard, Daily Trust).
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Health and Labour and Employment have acknowledged receipt of the ultimatum and expressed willingness to continue dialogue. However, previous negotiations have failed to deliver tangible outcomes, leaving many doctors frustrated.
With Nigeria already grappling with a brain drain in the medical sector, another strike by resident doctors could paralyse public hospitals and worsen the country’s health care delivery, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Sele Media Africa will continue monitoring government response and NARD’s next steps as the 30-day deadline counts down.
