Reps Summon Transport Minister Over Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment
The House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, to appear before it within 48 hours following the recent derailment of a passenger train on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor. The incident, which occurred on August 26, 2025, near Jere, has raised concerns over the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure.
During a plenary session, lawmakers expressed alarm over the frequency of train derailments on the Abuja-Kaduna route, citing multiple incidents in recent months. Representative Umar Ajilo, who moved the motion, highlighted that the train had derailed twice within a short span, endangering the lives of hundreds of passengers. The House resolved to investigate the causes of these recurring mishaps and demanded that the minister provide a comprehensive explanation of the measures being taken to prevent future occurrences. In response to the August 26 derailment, Minister Alkali inaugurated a 12-member committee tasked with probing the immediate and remote causes of the incident. The committee, chaired by Musa O. Ibrahim, includes representatives from the Nigerian Railway Corporation, civil society organizations, technical experts, and passenger representatives. Their mandate is to recommend actionable solutions to enhance the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s rail transport system. [2]
Addressing the public, Minister Alkali dismissed speculations of sabotage, stating that preliminary investigations did not indicate any foul play. He assured Nigerians that the damaged portions of the rail tracks would be repaired within 10 days, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy to the Abuja-Kaduna rail services. The House has mandated its Committee on Land Transportation to conduct a thorough investigation into the derailments and report back within four weeks. As the nation awaits the outcomes of these inquiries, stakeholders and the general public continue to call for urgent reforms to ensure the safety of rail passengers across the country.
