Release Nnamdi Kanu for Medical Treatment – Ohanaeze President Urges FG
Reported by David Joshua | Selemedia Africa
The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on humanitarian and medical grounds.
Speaking during a recent media address, Azuta-Mbata stressed the deteriorating health condition of the separatist leader, who has been in DSS custody since 2021. He emphasized the need for Kanu to receive urgent, independent medical treatment, stating that his health concerns can no longer be ignored.
“This is not just a political matter anymore — it is a humanitarian issue,” he said. “We appeal to President Bola Tinubu and all relevant authorities to allow Kanu access to proper medical care before it is too late.”
The Ohanaeze leader reiterated that the call is not an endorsement of Kanu’s political actions, but rather a plea rooted in the principles of justice, compassion, and respect for human rights.
Azuta-Mbata also urged the government to consider the broader implications of Kanu’s continued detention on national unity and peace in the South-East region, calling for dialogue and reconciliation as a way forward.
Why It Matters:
This fresh plea adds to the growing list of voices across Nigeria and the international community calling for a political resolution to the ongoing legal and human rights concerns surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention.
Kanu’s legal team has repeatedly flagged concerns about his health, while groups like Amnesty International and several Igbo socio-political organizations have echoed similar demands for his release on medical grounds.
As public attention returns to the IPOB leader’s plight, all eyes are now on the federal authorities to see if they will heed this call.
