Rebels Kill 89 Civilians in Eastern DR Congo!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
At least 89 civilians, including an estimated 20 women and an unspecified number of children, were killed by rebel fighters from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in a spate of fatal attacks across the Lubero and Beni sectors of North Kivu Province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). [1]
The attacks, which took place over the week of 13–19 November 2025, saw assailants linked with the Islamic State Central Africa Province (the ADF’s IS‑affiliated branch) storm multiple villages, loot medical supplies, abduct civilians and burn homes. One of the worst incidents occurred at a Catholic church‑run health centre in Byambwe where 17 people were killed and four patient wards were set on fire. [1]
“These were particularly deadly,” said a United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) statement, calling for an independent investigation by Congolese authorities. [1]
Why It Matters
- The scale and ferocity of the attacks indicate that the ADF remains a potent threat in eastern DR Congo, despite regional efforts to counter it.
- The targeting of civilians including women and children, and attacks on health‑service infrastructure, mark a serious humanitarian and rule‑of‑law crisis.
- With the mineral‑rich and conflict‑ridden North Kivu region already under strain from multiple armed groups, the ADF’s resurgence complicates peace efforts and drives displacement.
What to Watch
- Whether the DR Congo government launches an independent inquiry into the incidents and prosecutes perpetrators.
- How MONUSCO, regional partners (including Uganda) and the Congolese armed forces coordinate to degrade the ADF’s operational capacity.
- The humanitarian fallout—specifically whether more civilians are displaced, and how relief agencies respond.
