Publish All High‑Profile Petitions, Akpabio Tells EFCC!

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to publish and make public all high‑profile petitions submitted to the agency, stating that transparency is critical to restoring public trust in anti‑corruption efforts.
During a recent session of the National Assembly, Akpabio emphasised that a failure to publish details of petitions and investigations gives rise to rumours and weakens accountability. He said, “When petitions involving prominent Nigerians are kept hidden, it breeds suspicion and erodes confidence in our institutions.”
Akpabio’s call comes amid ongoing concerns over selective investigations and the perceived lack of outcomes in several high‑profile cases. He stated that the Senate would consider reviewing the EFCC Act to strengthen its mandate and ensure it functions effectively as a prosecution agency, not just an aggressive investigatory body. [1] The Senate President added that in the first two years of the 10th Assembly, only 18 out of 80 citizen petitions had been acted on. He pointed to this figure as evidence that operational bottlenecks and a lack of transparency persist. [2]
Akpabio concluded by urging the EFCC to publish regular status reports on petitions and investigations, including outcomes or reasons for closure, in order to remove ambiguity and enhance public trust.
