PSC Tightens Police Promotions: Fail Three Times, Face Retirement!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced a stricter promotion policy for senior police officers, stating that those who fail promotion examinations three times will be compulsorily retired.
During the latest exercise in Abuja involving 30 senior officers, the PSC warned that the new rules are part of a broader push toward a merit‑based system. Under the policy, officers who cannot pass prescribed promotion exams after three attempts will remain in their current rank and face mandatory retirement.
This approach aligns with recent PSC statements by Chairman Hashimu Argungu (retd), who emphasized that the commission would no longer allow irregular or “special” promotions. He noted that promotions must henceforth be based on merit, written examinations, and interviews—not seniority or favoritism. [1]
