Post-UTME: Rising Fees and Logistical Burdens Spark Public Outcry
ABUJA, Nigeria — The escalating costs associated with Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) processes across Nigerian tertiary institutions have ignited widespread concern among students, parents, and education stakeholders.
Originally capped at ₦2,000 by a directive from former Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, Post-UTME fees have surged to ₦5,000, ₦10,000, or more in many institutions. Additionally, candidates are now required to pay non-refundable acceptance fees ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, further straining families already grappling with economic hardships.
Beyond the financial implications, candidates and their guardians face significant logistical challenges. Many are compelled to travel long distances for screenings, often without adequate provisions for accommodation or safety. Instances of parents and candidates enduring arduous journeys, only to face substandard conditions upon arrival, have been reported.Education stakeholders have voiced their concerns, urging the Federal Ministry of Education and regulatory bodies to intervene. Suggestions include standardizing Post-UTME fees, eliminating unnecessary charges, and adopting online screening methods to alleviate the burdens on candidates.
As the 2025 admission cycle progresses, there is a growing consensus on the need for reforms to ensure that the pursuit of higher education remains accessible and equitable for all Nigerian students.
