Police Retirees Demand Total Exit from Contributory Pension Scheme!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Retired police officers under the Association of Retired Police Officers (ARPO), Imo State Chapter, staged a peaceful protest in Owerri on Tuesday, calling for their complete withdrawal from Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
What Happened:
- The retirees carried placards and marched to the Imo State Government House, decrying what they called “a failed pension system.”
- They alleged that the CPS has subjected many of them to poverty, delayed payments, and unjust pension deductions.
What They’re Saying:
- “We served the nation with our lives. We deserve dignity, not this exploitative pension system,” said one retired officer.
- ARPO demanded that police personnel be returned to the defined benefits scheme under the Pension Reform Act (pre-2004 structure).
Why It Matters:
- The protest highlights growing dissatisfaction among security personnel retirees nationwide.
- This adds pressure on the National Assembly and federal authorities to review or reform pension laws for uniformed officers.
