Police Arrest Four for Possessing Banned Fireworks, Knockouts in Imo By Enock Damidami | Sele Media Africa
The Imo State Police Command has arrested four individuals in possession of large quantities of banned fireworks and knockouts ahead of the festive celebrations in Owerri and other parts of the state. The arrests follow the state governmentโs directive banning the use, sale, and distribution of explosives to prevent fire outbreaks and ensure public safety. [1]Spokesperson for the command, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrests in a press statement on Saturday, noting that the suspects were apprehended during coordinated raids in major markets and black spots. He said the suspects had already been charged to court, while the recovered explosives โ which included knockouts, bangers, and industrial-grade fireworksโ were seized and destroyed. [2]โThe command reiterates that anyone found flouting the directive on banned fireworks will be arrested and prosecuted,โ Okoye stated, urging residents to celebrate responsibly and report suspicious activities. [2] The Imo State Government earlier warned that indiscriminate use of fireworks could cause panic, misinterpreted as gunfire in a state still grappling with security challenges. The police also warned that fireworks can trigger unrest and accidents, particularly in crowded areas during the Yuletide. [1][3]Authorities are intensifying patrols and surveillance during the holiday season to ensure compliance with public safety regulations.
