Poland Briefly Closes Airspace as NATO Increases Military Presence in Baltic Sea
Warsaw, Poland – September 28, 2025 Poland briefly closed part of its airspace late Friday night amid increased military activity and surveillance flights linked to NATO’s growing presence in the Baltic Sea region, as tensions with Russia continue to rise. The Polish Armed Forces confirmed the airspace restriction over the northeastern region near the Kaliningrad border, citing the movement of allied military aircraft and “heightened security coordination” with NATO forces. NATO Presence Expands in Baltic Sea – The move comes as NATO significantly boosts its naval and aerial deployments in the Baltic Sea, in response to recent Russian military drills and alleged airspace violations near member states, including Estonia and Latvia.A NATO spokesperson confirmed that the USS Roosevelt, a U.S. Navy destroyer, and multiple AWACS surveillance aircraft were active in the area this week as part of ongoing “defensive deterrence operations.” (Source: DW News, CNN, Defense News).
Poland’s Ministry of Defence reassured the public that the closure was temporary and precautionary, lasting less than an hour, and was not the result of any direct attack or violation of Polish airspace. “This was a coordinated NATO operation. There was no threat to civilian flights or national security,” said Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. (Source: Poland IN, Associated Press).
The developments follow a pattern of heightened military readiness in Eastern Europe as fears grow over Russia’s activities along NATO’s eastern flank. Analysts warn that the increased surveillance and joint military drills could further strain already fragile diplomatic relations.
Sele Media Africa will continue monitoring NATO operations and regional reactions as the Baltic Sea becomes a renewed flashpoint in East-West relations.
