PLATEAU: “We’re Reviving Agriculture, Others Amidst Struggle With Insecurity” — Mutfwang Jos, Plateau State
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang of Plateau State says his administration is working to revive agriculture and other key sectors even as the state grapples with longstanding security challenges. The strategy aims to restore livelihoods and establish sustainable peace.
Key Highlights
A state-appointed Fact‑Finding Committee reported that 420 communities have been attacked over two decades, resulting in nearly 12,000 lives lost in Plateau. Mutfwang described agriculture as the backbone of his “prosperity agenda,” and pledged to support farmers with technology, improved value‑chains, markets, and infrastructure. Initiatives include partnering with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the revival of BARC Farms. Other measures involve recruitment of 1,000 youths into Operation Rainbow — Plateau’s community-based rural security team to protect farmers and provide early warning in vulnerable areas. The government is also working on irrigation schemes to reduce dependence on rain, improving livestock breeds, promoting local feed production, and a modern abattoir. Agricultural input support has been revived: subsidized fertilizers and farm inputs are being distributed, and technology is being used for mapping and digital registration of farmers. Challenges & Outlook- Insecurity remains a major hurdle, with frequent attacks on farmers, destruction of crops, and kidnapping in farming communities. These acts have made farming dangerous and disrupted food supply chains. Governor Mutfwang argues that restoring agriculture is not just an economic necessity but also essential for peace and stability. In his words: “By revitalizing our farmlands … we will restore confidence and provide alternatives to conflict.”
Why It Matters
This renewed focus on agriculture is seen as both a strategy to revive Plateau’s economy and heal communities divided and traumatized by violence. With balanced investments in security and agricultural infrastructure, Governor Mutfwang hopes the state can reclaim its role as one of Nigeria’s leading food baskets.
