Plateau Local Government Elections Set for September 2026 as PLASIEC Releases Timetable
Reported by Suzan Daniel – Sele Media Africa

In a move to strengthen grassroots democracy, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has officially announced that local government elections will be held across all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

This development was confirmed by Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak, Chairman of PLASIEC, during a press briefing held in Jos on Thursday, where he also presented the timetable and schedule of activities leading to the elections.

According to Cishak, the roadmap for the electoral process aligns with the PLASIEC Law 2024, which mandates that the tenure of elected local officials is two years, and requires that an election notice be issued 360 days before the poll.

Key Dates in the PLASIEC Election Timetable:
• September 4, 2025: Publication of notice of election and release of full timetable.
• January 12–30, 2026: Conduct of political party primaries.
• February 2 – March 2, 2026: Collection and submission of nomination forms.
• March 7, 2026: Publication of candidates’ particulars.
• March 30, 2026: Release of final list of candidates.
• - Campaign Period: Begins immediately after final list and continues until 24 hours before voting.

Election Day will be Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, in accordance with Section 33 of the PLASIEC Law.

“This notice is dated the 4th of September 2025. Signed, Clarence Daniel Cishak, Chairman,” the statement concluded.

Commitment to Credibility

Cishak emphasized PLASIEC’s readiness to deliver free, fair, transparent, and credible elections, promising improvements from previous experiences.

“We may not get everything perfectly, but we’re determined to make this historic by avoiding any gap in local government administration. We will follow this timetable religiously,” he assured.

He urged political parties, civil society organizations, and the media to collaborate with the commission for a peaceful and transparent process.

Why It Matters

The announcement comes as Plateau State seeks to restore confidence in local governance after years of interrupted democratic processes at the local level, often plagued by delays, caretaker appointments, and legal battles.

Stakeholders and analysts have praised PLASIEC for the early release of the timetable, giving parties and candidates ample time to prepare.
