PLATEAU CRISIS: Military Warns Communities — “You Have No Right to Defend Yourselves, It Escalates Crisis”

The Nigerian Army has issued a strong warning to residents of Plateau State, stating that local communities taking up arms in self-defense are contributing to the worsening of violence in the region.
The military expressed concern over reports that some communities, in a bid to protect themselves from attacks, have begun retaliatory actions—further deepening the crisis rather than resolving it.
“You have no right to defend yourselves. Defending yourselves is escalating the crisis,” the army reportedly stated in response to recent clashes.
The warning follows continued unrest in Plateau, where intercommunal violence and armed attacks have claimed lives, displaced residents, and heightened ethnic and religious tensions.
While some citizens argue they are forced to defend themselves due to slow or inadequate response from security agencies, the military insists that lawful resolution must come through government intervention, not civilian retaliation.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and urged residents to report threats and allow security forces to take action.
Sele Media Africa will continue to monitor developments in the Plateau crisis.
