KANO, Nigeria — Former Governor of Anambra State and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, today visited Singer Market in Kano State to console traders affected by a devastating fire that recently destroyed goods worth millions of naira.
Obi, who travelled from Lagos to Kano, expressed profound sympathy to the market’s traders and leadership over the loss of property and livelihoods caused by the inferno. During his visit, he described the incident as a significant loss not only to the traders but also to the economic fabric of Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
“Let me start by saying my sincere sympathy to the leadership of this facility on what recently happened. We are here physically to see what happened at Singer Market and the large loss suffered by the traders,” Obi said, emphasizing the importance of the market as a source of employment and economic activity.
Obi also pledged support to the victims, donating an undisclosed sum of money to assist in relief efforts and help affected traders recover from their losses. His show of solidarity was met with gratitude from market officials.
Jamilu Muhammad Zakari, Chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, thanked Obi for his compassion and willingness to travel to Kano at a time of distress for the traders.
“We appreciate your concern and the fact that you travelled all the way from Lagos to sympathise with us. It was an unfortunate incident, and we are grateful for your support,” Zakari remarked.
The fire at Singer Market—reported to have destroyed goods valued in the millions—has raised concerns over fire safety and emergency response preparedness in major trading hubs across the region. Trading hubs like Singer Market are vital centers for commerce in Kano, supporting thousands of businesses and employees.
Obi’s visit echoes similar responses he has made in the past to market fire outbreaks in other parts of Nigeria, highlighting the impact such tragedies have on local economies and the importance of national support in times of crisis.
