Abuja, Nigeria – August 28, 2025

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its existing zoning arrangement for national leadership positions, setting the stage for a Southern presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. This decision was reached during the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25, 2025, in Abuja.

The NEC approved the report of the National Convention Zoning Committee, which recommended retaining all national office positions in their current regions. Specifically, positions in the Northern Region will remain in the North, while those in the Southern Region will stay in the South. Additionally, the Presidential Candidate for the 2027 election has been zoned to the Southern Region.

A communiqué detailing the resolutions was read by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, at the end of the meeting. The NEC expressed satisfaction with the party’s preparations for its upcoming National Convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The zoning arrangement for national offices is as follows:

North Central:

  • Deputy National Chairman (North)- National Treasurer
  • Deputy National Financial Secretary
  • Deputy National Woman’s Leader

North East:

  • National Organizing Secretary
  • National Youth Leader
  • Deputy National Publicity Secretary

North West:

  • National Chairman
  • National Legal Adviser
  • Deputy National Auditor

South East:

  • Deputy National Secretary
  • National Financial Secretary
  • National Women Leader
  • Deputy National Youth Leader

South South:

  • Deputy National Chairman (South)
  • National Publicity Secretary
  • Deputy National Treasurer
  • Deputy National Legal Adviser

South West:

  • National Secretary
  • National Auditor
  • Deputy National Organizing Secretary

The NEC also directed the regions to micro-zone positions within their areas for immediate implementation. This move is seen as a strategic effort to maintain internal cohesion and ensure equitable representation across the party’s diverse membership.

The decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South aligns with the PDP’s commitment to power rotation and national unity. It also reflects the party’s intention to present a candidate who can garner widespread support across the country’s geopolitical zones. As the PDP prepares for its National Convention in November, political observers and party members alike will be watching closely to see how these zoning arrangements influence the selection of candidates and the party’s overall strategy for the 2027 elections.
