PDP, PDI Staff Reaffirm Loyalty to Turaki-Led NWC!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
The management and staff of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI) have publicly reaffirmed their recognition, loyalty, and allegiance to the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) amid ongoing leadership disputes within the party.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, 76 senior staff members declared that they would not recognise any alternative leadership outside the NWC elected at the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15–16, 2025.
The workers, who described themselves as the custodians of the PDP National Secretariat, stressed that the Turaki-led committee was validly elected in line with the party’s constitution, citing Supreme Court precedents that affirm the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.
The statement followed a recent ruling by the Federal High Court, Ibadan, which nullified the Ibadan convention and recommended the establishment of a caretaker committee. The PDP staff rejected the ruling, arguing that it contradicts established legal principles and internal party processes.
According to the staff, the Ibadan convention was lawfully convened by the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in July 2025, with all statutory requirements under the Electoral Act fulfilled, including formal notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
They further maintained that the tenure of the previous NWC had expired, rendering any competing leadership claims outside the Turaki-led committee invalid and illegitimate.
While expressing confidence in the party’s legal strategy to challenge the court ruling on appeal, the staff urged party members to remain united as the PDP positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The renewed show of loyalty by PDP and PDI personnel underscores the deepening internal divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party as it continues to navigate complex legal and political challenges surrounding its leadership structure.
