Calabar — The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) turbulence in Cross River State has escalated after state chairman Venatius Ikem rejected his purported removal by the State Working Committee (SWC), calling the move unconstitutional and considering legal action. [1]A letter dated November 15, 2024, signed by 14 members of the SWC, attempted to remove Ikem over allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and high‑handedness. The Local Government chapter chairmen in all 18 LGAs endorsed his removal. [1]Ikem, however, addressed journalists in Calabar and dismissed those allegations as politically motivated, stating that his leadership has complied with party procedures, held meetings regularly, and performed well in elections despite challenges. [1]In response, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) declared the suspension null, void, and of no effect, citing that no State Working Committee has power to suspend a State Chairman without due process according to the party’s constitution. The NWC reaffirmed that Ikem remains the legitimate chairman. [2]Party stakeholders in Cross River have reacted strongly—some protesting the reinstatement, others rejecting the removal as damaging to the party’s unity. [3]
