PDP Convention Will Hold Despite Defections — Bauchi Gov!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has reaffirmed that neither defections nor internal dissent will derail the PDP’s planned national convention in Ibadan on November 15–16.
He made this declaration amid rising defections and factional pressures within the party.
What the PDP Govs Say
- At their 7th meeting in Gusau, the PDP Governors’ Forum issued a communique insisting that the convention will proceed as scheduled regardless of intra-party turbulence. [1]
- They described the November convention as a “national rescue mission,” intended to reposition the PDP for the 2027 elections. [1]
- Responding to calls from dissenting voices within the PDP (notably from the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s camp) to postpone or impose conditions on the event, Gov. Bala Mohammed declared, “We are not cowards… we cannot allow others to take us to the slaughterhouse.” [2]
Why It Matters
- The convention is seen as a pivotal moment for resolving internal PDP fractures and consolidating party structure ahead of 2027
- Defections, especially of high-profile governors and lawmakers, have fueled uncertainty over the party’s coherence and electoral viability.
- If the convention succeeds despite resistance, it could restore momentum and unity within the PDP; failure or a disrupted convention could deepen internal rifts.
