VOM, PLATEAU STATE โAt least nine people have been killed in a deadly gunmen attack on Chigwi (Chugwi) village in the Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving families devastated and residents fleeing for safety.
According to local leaders, the assailants struck the Bomi area of Chigwi village late on Wednesday night (December 31, 2025), just as residents were preparing to usher in the New Year. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots between 10 p.m. and midnight, and by early Thursday morning, nine bodies had been recovered โ including eight discovered in the aftermath and one who later died at a hospital. Many others were injured, though their exact numbers are still being documented as survivors and authorities account for missing persons. [1]The secretary to the district head of Vwang, Iliya Chung, confirmed the violence, noting with deep sorrow that an entire family was wiped out, with only one child surviving. He explained that the attack took villagers by surprise, forcing some to flee into nearby bushes and unsettled areas in search of safety.
The community has since suspended planned New Year celebrations amid rising fear and anxiety. [1]Security operatives, including the Plateau State Police Command, have reportedly moved into the area to verify casualty counts and investigate the incident. Authorities have yet to publicly disclose whether the attackers have been identified, but the attack adds to a troubling pattern of armed raids and violence that have plagued Plateau Stateโs rural communities over recent years.
