Oworonshoki Residents Protest Midnight Demolitions Amid Third Mainland Bridge Gridlock
Residents of Oworonshoki, Lagos, have taken to the streets to protest the recent demolition of homes in their community, which they claim has exacerbated traffic congestion on the Third Mainland Bridge and left many families homeless.
The demolitions, reportedly carried out in the early hours of September 6 by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), targeted structures in areas including Ojuleru, Mosafejo Idiaraba, and Oke-Eri. Eyewitnesses allege that residents were forcibly evicted, with some subjected to teargas, before bulldozers razed their homes [1] [2] .
The Oworo Youths Forum (OYF) condemned the demolitions as a “crime against humanity,” noting that over 1,000 homes have been destroyed since July 2023, displacing more than 30,000 people, including women and children [2]
Community leaders and civil society organizations, including the Take It Back Movement, have called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to halt the demolitions and provide compensation and resettlement for affected residents. They argue that the demolitions violate human rights and disrupt the socio-economic fabric of the community [3] .
The Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the demolitions. However, the ongoing protests highlight the growing tension between urban development initiatives and the rights of residents in Lagos.
