Security operatives in Gassa village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, have intercepted and seized over 500 cows belonging to suspected Fulani herdsmen after the animals were found grazing on farmlands and destroying crops.

According to local reports, farmers in the community raised an alarm after sighting herders allowing their cattle to graze freely on maize farms. Security personnel swiftly responded and, upon arrival, discovered over 1,000 cows feeding on the farms.

The Nigerian Army’s Sector 4 Base in Barkin Ladi subsequently impounded about 500 of the cows for further investigation.

On Sunday, Army officials visited the affected farmlands to assess the level of destruction and were reportedly shocked to find that no fewer than 75 farms had been damaged by the rampaging cattle.

Community leaders in Gassa have called for swift justice, commending the security operatives for their prompt response while urging the government to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“We are not violent people and will not take the law into our own hands,” a community representative said. “But justice must be swift, because justice delayed is justice denied.”
