Ooni of Ife renews diplomatic passport, praises Tinubu’s Immigration reforms

Abuja, Nigeria — His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), on Wednesday visited the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters in Abuja to renew his diplomatic passport, where he also lauded the immigration reforms being implemented under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The revered traditional ruler was warmly received by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, alongside senior officials of the agency during the visit. According to an official statement signed by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the visit was part of the Ooni’s routine passport renewal exercise.
During the engagement, Oba Ogunwusi expressed his appreciation for the sweeping reforms the service has undertaken under the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” a reform-driven blueprint of the federal government. He commended the federal leadership for the strengthening of migration management, border governance, and improved service delivery within the immigration system. “The Ooni of Ife said he was grateful for policies aimed at strengthening migration management, border governance, and service delivery, and appreciated ongoing reforms that are repositioning the Nigeria Immigration Service,” the NIS statement added. Over the past year, the Nigeria Immigration Service, under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior, has rolled out substantial institutional reforms, including contactless passport services and digitalisation of key migration processes, aimed at modernising the nation’s immigration architecture and easing passport issuance.
These reforms are part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and improve efficiency in passport services — efforts which the Ooni described as transformative and beneficial to Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora. The monarchy’s public commendation highlights the growing recognition of the immigration reforms as part of Nigeria’s national development agenda, even as stakeholders continue to call for expanded access and improved service standards across all passport and migration management centres.
