Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, wife of the Ogun State Governor, on Tuesday launched a large-scale menstrual hygiene campaign aimed at distributing free sanitary pads to 10,000 schoolgirls in rural communities across the state.
The launch, which took place in Abeokuta to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, is part of a broader effort to reduce period poverty and promote girls’ education by ensuring access to safe and hygienic menstrual products.
“No girl should miss school or suffer shame because of her period. This is about dignity and equal opportunity,” Mrs. Abiodun said at the launch event.
Key Details:
- The initiative targets girls in underserved areas, especially those in public secondary schools.
- Health education on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health is being provided alongside the distribution.
- The project is backed by the Ogun State Ministry of Health and supported by private health partners.
Why It Matters:
- Studies show many girls in Nigeria miss school during menstruation due to lack of sanitary products.
- The initiative aligns with SDG Goal 5 on gender equality and girls’ empowerment.
- It also challenges stigmas and cultural taboos around menstruation in rural communities.
