The government of Ogun State has issued a stern warning to residents living in riverbank, wetland and low‑lying communities to prepare for possible flash floods between October 20 and November 3, 2025. [1]
According to the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, the alert follows heavy rainfall upstream and the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam — factors that could combine to raise water levels in the Ogun River and its tributaries. [1]
Affected Areas
Communities identified as most at‑risk include:
- Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola in the Ota–Abeokuta corridor. [1]
- Parts of Abeokuta including Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin‑Olugbade and Ago‑Odo. [2]
Government‑advised Precautions
- Residents in flood‑prone zones are advised not to stay along riverbanks or wetland areas during the warned period. [1]
- Those living in high‑risk areas should move to higher ground or take measures to elevate their stay.
- Fish farmers operating in the affected areas have been urged to harvest their stock promptly to avoid losses from rising waters. [1]
- The state reassured the public that flood control measures such as dredging and clearing of tributaries are ongoing in partnership with the Ogun–Osun River Basin Authority to reduce impact. [1]
Officials emphasise the alert is preventive, not cause for panic, and urge all residents in identified zones to heed warnings and cooperate with local emergency agencies.
