NURTW leader to be arraigned after dispatch rider beaten to death — Lagos lawmakers demand swift justice!
Reported for Sele Media Africa by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan
Lagos — Lawmakers in Lagos have issued a strongly worded condemnation after a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) was accused of mercilessly beating a dispatch rider, an attack that left the rider fatally injured. The suspect, identified in reports as Shamsideen Adio (also reported as Samsideen Oladiti and popularly known as “Shamelon”), was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command and is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba.
According to eyewitness footage that has been widely shared online, the assault occurred on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, after a dispute in which the rider was accused of scratching the NURTW leader’s vehicle. Witnesses say Adio and others struck the rider repeatedly — reportedly with a helmet and with bare hands — until he collapsed. The victim was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
The Lagos State House of Assembly described the attack as “barbaric, shameful, inhuman and heartbreaking,” and urged that those involved be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Adewale Adedeji, chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Transportation, said the incident — captured on video — shows a dangerous abuse of power and called for swift, transparent legal action.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and said investigations are ongoing. Police spokespeople have indicated the suspect will be formally arraigned in court on Friday as enquiries into possible accomplices continue.
The arrest and the viral footage have sparked protests and widespread public outrage, prompting calls from community leaders and politicians for the NURTW leadership to cooperate with investigators and for authorities to ensure justice for the deceased and his family. Several national and local outlets are following developments as the case proceeds to court.
