NUJ Hails DSS for Releasing Detained Journalists
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for the swift release of two journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang, who were recently arrested in Jos, Plateau State.
The journalists, both staff of Jay 101.9 FM, were reportedly picked up by DSS operatives while covering the funeral ceremony of the late mother of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Sunday, the NUJ described their release as “a welcome development” and appreciated the security agency for responding promptly to calls for their freedom.
“We thank the DSS for listening to reason and respecting the rights of journalists to operate freely in a democratic society,” the NUJ said. “Journalists play a critical role in informing the public, and any infringement on their work must be addressed swiftly.”
The union also urged security agencies across the country to adopt a more collaborative and respectful approach when dealing with members of the press, while reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and responsible journalism.
This incident sparked concern among media stakeholders and rights activists, who called for due process and accountability in the handling of journalists during public assignments.
