No Agreement Signed with Dangote Refinery, Strike May Resume — PENGASSAN!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has stated that it did not sign the communiqué that reportedly ended its nationwide strike against Dangote Refinery. The union warned that unless all its demands are met, the suspended strike may resume.
Union Clarifies Position
- PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, explained that while a temporary truce was reached following government intervention, the union’s National Executive Council has not signed any binding agreement.
- He described certain unresolved “grey areas” in the mediated document, especially regarding the fate of over 800 sacked workers.
- According to him, the strike has been suspended, not called off entirely — pending fulfillment of agreed terms.
Background
- The union had declared a nationwide strike after Dangote Refinery allegedly sacked hundreds of unionized staff, a move PENGASSAN condemned as illegal.
- The strike disrupted crude and gas supplies to the refinery and reportedly impacted national oil output.
- Following court orders and government-led negotiations, a temporary suspension of the strike was announced — but the union insists the final agreement was not ratified by its leadership.
