NMA Suspends Medical Services in Edo Over Doctors’ Abduction By Enock Damidami | Sele Media Africa
Benin City, Edo State — The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced a suspension of medical services across the state following the kidnapping of two doctors in separate abduction incidents, escalating concerns over security threats to healthcare workers. [1]In a statement issued by Dr. Eustace Oseghale, Chairman of the Edo NMA, the association said it would withhold clinical services until the abducted doctors are safely released and effective security measures are put in place to protect medical personnel and patients alike. [1]The abducted doctors — Dr. Abu Babatunde and Dr. Stephen Osamaye — were reportedly taken by suspected kidnappers in separate locations within Edo State. One incident occurred near Auchi, while the other was along Illeh Road, Ekpoma. [1]“The safety and security of our healthcare workers are of paramount importance… we will not resume services until there is a clear commitment to their protection,” Dr. Oseghale said, adding that rising insecurity is increasingly undermining health care delivery across the state. [1]The NMA has called on the Edo State Government as well as security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted doctors and prevent further attacks on frontline health workers. Healthcare delivery in many facilities has been disrupted, with patients urged to seek alternative arrangements. [1]The suspension highlights growing fears among medical professionals following repeated violent acts and abductions targeting health workers, an issue that has also sparked protests and demands for urgent government action.
