“Nigerian Software Engineer Loses 260K USD Job Due to Nationality”
Sele Media Africa — Reported by Suzan Daniel
In a disheartening turn of events, Nigerian software engineer Ridwan Akinfenwa has shared how he lost a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) position worth over260,000 per year solely because of his nationality.
Akinfenwa, who had recently secured the lucrative role, disclosed on his LinkedIn page that the opportunity was rescinded after the hiring company cited compliance regulations that prevented them from employing Nigerian nationals.
“Today, I received a termination email that shattered my hopes. The message cited further compliance checks, revealing that the organisation could no longer work with Nigerian nationals due to regulatory constraints,” he wrote.
This incident is not isolated. Akinfenwa noted that he has faced multiple instances where his nationality has hindered his career progression.
“This year alone, I’ve encountered multiple instances where my nationality has cost me significant career advancements, to the point where I’ve lost count of the setbacks,” he added.
The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by African professionals in the global tech industry, where systemic barriers and regulatory constraints can impede access to opportunities.
