Nigeria Needs Integrated Transport Policy to Compete Globally — Institute
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) has stressed the urgent need for an integrated national transport policy to position Nigeria for global economic competitiveness. Speaking at the 5th National Transport Summit in Abuja, the institute called for a unified framework that supports smarter mobility systems, coordinated regulation, and sustainable infrastructure development.
“Without integration across air, road, rail, and maritime transport, Nigeria will struggle to attract investment and compete globally,” said Dr. Bashir Jamoh, CIoTA President.
Key Details:
- CIoTA is advocating the creation of a National Road Transport Authority (NRTA) to regulate, plan, and professionalise the road transport system.
- The institute urged alignment of policies among the Federal Ministry of Transportation, state governments, and private sector actors.
- Participants also emphasised the role of digitalisation and environmentally sustainable transport solutions.
Why It Matters:
- Nigeria’s fragmented transport systems hinder logistics, raise costs, and reduce trade competitiveness.
- Integrated planning can reduce road congestion, improve safety, and align with Africa’s Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals.
- Better transport policy supports broader economic growth, job creation, and urban development.
What to Watch:
- Federal Government’s response to CIoTA’s call for a coordinated transport policy framework.
- Progress toward establishing a National Road Transport Authority.
- Alignment of new transport policies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and AfCFTA.
