“Nigeria Needs Citizens with Character, Not Just Soldiers with Weapons” — Marwa
Abuja — Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has called for a shift in national values, urging Nigerians to uphold discipline, loyalty, and resilience in confronting the country’s challenges. He emphasized that what the nation needs are citizens of character, not just armed soldiers. Marwa made the comment while speaking at the 38th anniversary celebration of the Nigeria Military School (NMS) Class of 1982 in Abuja. Reflecting on his days at NMS in Zaria, Marwa noted that students were not judged by their background such as family connection, language, or religion but united by brotherhood and shared values. He praised the NMS Class of ’82 for raising two of the current Service Chiefs Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (Navy) and Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar (Air Force) citing it as evidence of the kind of leadership that results from strong foundational values. Marwa urged the alumni to remain examples in public service and personal integrity, reminding them and all Nigerians that true strength lies in character, courage, loyalty, discipline, and resilience rather than in mere possession of weapons. Nigeria continues to wrestle with serious security challenges insurgency, banditry, kidnapping. Marwa’s statement frames the debate as not just one of firepower, but of societal character and civic responsibility. Emphasizing character seeks to broaden the solution beyond the military, placing weight on citizens’ values: unity, service, ethical behaviour. The speech also contributes to ongoing discussions about how to rebuild trust between citizens and state institutions, especially in security, governance, and public service.
