Nigeria Ends Tokyo Run with Amusan as Sole Medallist!
Sele Media Africa | Reported by David Joshua
Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo with a single medal to its name — thanks to star hurdler Tobi Amusan, who clinched silver in the women’s 100m hurdles event.
Amusan, who was also Nigeria’s best hope heading into the competition, finished the race with a time of 12.46 seconds, narrowly behind the gold medalist, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, who clocked 12.39 seconds.
Her podium finish not only saved Nigeria from a medal-less tournament but also reinforced her consistency on the global stage despite recent controversies and setbacks.
“I gave it everything. I wanted the gold, but I’m grateful for the silver. I’m still standing,” Amusan said after the race.
The rest of Team Nigeria, however, struggled to make an impact across track and field events, with many failing to advance past the qualifying stages. The disappointing overall performance has once again raised questions about Nigeria’s investment in athletics development, coaching, and athlete welfare.
Despite the outcome, Amusan’s performance has been widely praised by fans and analysts who lauded her resilience and ability to shine under pressure.
As attention turns to the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, stakeholders are calling for better preparation and support structures for Nigerian athletes to ensure improved global competitiveness.
