Nigeria and Colombia Forge Closer Ties with Plans for Direct Flights

In a significant move to bolster diplomatic and economic relations, Nigeria and Colombia are actively working towards establishing direct flight connections between the two nations. This initiative was announced during high-level talks in Abuja on September 1, 2025, marking a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.

Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez, during her official visit to Nigeria, highlighted aviation as a key area for strengthening ties. “We have had a meeting with the business leaders in aviation on the need to start direct flights to Colombia,” she stated, emphasizing the mutual benefits in areas like social justice, gender equality, and inclusivity. The discussions were formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Colombia’s Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs, Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir. [2]

President Bola Tinubu assured the Colombian delegation of Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the agreements promptly. He noted that Nigeria would replicate the aviation and consular agreements previously signed with Brazil to enhance relations with Colombia. [3]

Vice President Kashim Shettima described the visit as an opportunity to rekindle ancestral ties disrupted by slavery and colonialism, positioning Nigeria and Colombia for a prosperous partnership. [4]

The establishment of direct flights is expected to facilitate easier travel, boost trade, and foster cultural exchanges between Nigeria and Colombia, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations.
