NERC Transfers Electricity Regulatory Power to Gombe State
Reported by Sele Media Africa|Ihuoma Amarachi
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially transferred regulatory authority over electricity matters to the Gombe State Government, marking a significant step toward decentralised energy governance in Nigeria.According to a statement released by NERC and published on its official website, the transfer empowers Gombe to oversee and manage its own intrastate electricity market , including licensing, tariff regulation, and monitoring of electricity providers operating solely within the state. The move aligns with the recent amendment to the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, which allows states to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within their boundaries. This transfer makes Gombe one of the few Nigerian states taking full advantage of the legal reforms designed to improve power supply reliability at the state level.
The state government is expected to establish its own Electricity Regulatory Bureau, develop local policies, and collaborate with private sector operators to enhance energy access for homes and businesses.NERC reaffirmed its support to guide Gombe in building strong institutional capacity and ensuring consumer protection under the new arrangement. The commission had earlier made similar transfers to Lagos, Kaduna, and Edo states.
