Nepal Imposes Travel Ban on Ex-PM KP Sharma Oli Over Protest Violence!

The Government of Nepal has imposed a travel ban on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four other senior officials in connection with an ongoing investigation into the violent protests that erupted earlier this month.
According to Interior Minister Rabi Lamichhane, the decision follows preliminary findings that link the former officials to alleged incitement and failure to prevent the deadly unrest, which left several people dead and dozens injured.
“We have sufficient grounds to believe their involvement, directly or indirectly, in fuelling the tensions that led to the breakdown of law and order,” Lamichhane said at a press briefing on Monday.
The protests, which initially began as peaceful demonstrations against alleged government corruption, turned violent when clashes broke out between demonstrators and security forces in Kathmandu and other major cities. Government buildings and public infrastructure were damaged, prompting the declaration of curfews in some areas.
Oli, who led the country from 2015 to 2016 and again from 2018 to 2021, has denied the allegations, calling the travel ban a politically motivated attack. “This is an authoritarian move to silence opposition voices,” he said in a statement released through his party, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML).
The government says the travel restrictions will remain in place until the investigation is complete.
