ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Controller‑General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has promoted 16,582 correctional officers and personnelin the largest elevation exercise in the agency’s history, while issuing a stern warning against misconduct, collusion with inmates and other acts that could undermine institutional reforms and national security. [1]The mass promotion took place on Tuesday during a ceremonial event in the nation’s capital, bringing greater rank and responsibility to the majority of the service’s workforce. Of the officers promoted, 11,417 were senior officers, and 4,253 were junior personnel, according to Nwakuche. He also highlighted special promotions granted to officers who demonstrated “gallantry and exceptional performance.” [1]
Addressing the newly promoted officers, the NCoS boss reaffirmed the government’s zero‑tolerance policy for indiscipline and unprofessional conduct, particularly acts involving collaboration or inappropriate relationships with inmates — behaviour he said jeopardises public trust and the ongoing reform agenda. Nwakuche emphasised that any officer found culpable of such misconduct would face severe sanctions under the law and service regulations, regardless of rank. [1]The Controller‑General praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, for their support in enhancing the service’s morale and operational capacity through the promotions and broader correctional reforms. Observers say the disciplinary message comes against a backdrop of past sanctions within the service aimed at reinforcing professionalism and accountability. [1]
