Delta State — The Nigerian Navy, operating from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos, has announced the deactivation of six illegal refining sites in the Obodo Omadina community, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. Navy Capt. Ikenna Okoloagu said these operations, carried out in three separate raids, were part of Operation DELTA SANITY II, aimed at curbing economic sabotage and boosting oil output. [1]
Details of the Operations & Seizures
- According to Capt. Okoloagu, the six deactivated sites were uncovered in operations guided by credible intelligence. [1]
- The combined seizures from the operations included approximately 8,660 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,005 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). [1]
- Materials were stored across three ovens*, 28 dug‑out pits, and 14 polythene sacks before being dismantled. [1]
- Capt. Okoloagu reaffirmed that the Navy remains committed to neutralizing economic saboteurs in Nigeria’s territorial waters, aligning with the strategic direction set by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. [1]
- The operations occurred over dates including April 21, May 4, and May 11, 2025. [1] Broader Context & Significance
- These actions build on previous deactivations of illegal refining sites in the same region. For instance, the Navy had earlier dismantled four refining sites at Obodo in Omadino community. [2]
- In May 2025, the Navy also reported deactivating eight sites in multiple raids under the same Operation DELTA SANITY II, reinforcing its crackdown in the Niger Delta. [3]
- The efforts form part of Nigeria’s broader push to reduce crude theft, pipeline vandalism, and revenue losses, as well as to enhance national production capacity.
